The main objective of an Otoplasty cosmetic surgery involves the remodeling of the cartilage of the ear, in some patients it also includes the correction of prominent ears, disproportioned or asymmetric ears. Ears can be proportionately bigger than other features of the body from birth.
One of the most common methods for prominent ear cosmetic surgery consists in doing a small incision in the back part of the ear, allowing the cosmetic surgeon to mold the cartilage; the elimination of small amounts of cartilage can allow the flexing of the ears back towards the head of the patient. The ear surgery leaves a scar behind the ear that is normally hidden by the hair. The scars are generally not visible and fade away with time.
The ear cosmetic surgery is a highly individualized procedure and should be performed by choice.
The otoplasty cosmetic surgery is a good option for:
- People 5 years old and up.
- People that are not happy with the shape of their ears.
- Physically healthy and non-smokers.
- You have specific and realistic goals in mind for the improvement of their appearance.
Once the otoplasty surgery is finished a bandage is placed around the head. A few ours after the ear surgery, a pulsating and uncomfortable feeling can appear. This feeling can be relieved with analgesics that are prescribed by your cosmetic surgeon. The bandages are removed a week after surgery. Your ears still need protection and support while they heal, even after a month, so prepare yourself to keep using light bandages (an elastic light bandage) although it will only be used at night, for a period of a few weeks. This will protect your ears and help to establish them in their new position.
Parents will have to make sure that their children are aware of the necessary medical care. And you might have to informed this to the school where they attend. The teaching staff must be aware so they can watch the child in the game area and avoid them to perform any kind of sport. Stiches are removed a week after surgery. Children also require a minimum of a week of rest from school.
